Chola 232 East 58th Street, New York, NY opened in 1998 and after eight years, still lives up to its initial introduction by Ruth Reichl, of New York Times, under the headline: “An Indian restaurant breaks the mold.” Its extensive and “eclectic” menu spans all of India’s regions. The atmosphere is elegant and inviting, and the service, unassuming and attentive.

Food will surely be good but I'm extremely annoyed by the delivery service. I live 3 floors above the restaurant and scheduled a delivery for 8:30pm because I am working late and prefer not to waste time running up and down stairs. Lame you might say that I ordered delivery from a restaurant that's 3 floors below me (it's a brownstone!). Nonetheless, as of this writing at 8:42pm, they have yet to deliver the food that I ordered to be delivered _AT_ 8:30pm. I even called them at 8:40pm to ask where my food was and they said that they would deliver it immediately but as mentioned, I'm here writing this review at 8:44pm and still no food. Complete and utter failure to get someone to walk up 3 flights of stairs. Complete and utter failure. A follow up: it turns out that Chola by Tadka is Chola food from the Tadka restaurant on 53rd b/t 2nd and 3rd - 5 blocks from the Chola on 58th. This address and phone number should be reflected in the restaurant's listing on SeamlessWeb. I finally got my food at 8:55pm, after 2 phone calls and 25 minutes after the scheduled delivery time.

The food did not show. They called me after 40 minutes looking for directions, but it still never came. None of the delivery guys speak any English, so it is just impossible to deal with these guys.

Can't speak to the service since I have only ordered for delivery, but the food is awesome.

Food is decent. But their delivery time is always 45mins to an hour. I almost always have to call them to check on my order because its so late. They need to change their delivery time from 15-30 mins to 45 mins.

If I could give 0 starts to this restaurant, I would. I normally don't write reviews unless I feel very strongly about my experience and this is certainly the case with Chola (brought to you by Tadka). I recently ordered the Lunch special from this restaurant - Chicken Korma and it comes with Naan, rice and Daal. The Korma tasted like bland soup. I had specifically asked for it to be spicy and it was not spicy at all, bland as hell and there were 3 large pieces of chicken. The chicken pieces felt like rubber in my mouth. And best of all naan bread was uncooked! I haven't eaten the rice and the daal, but I have quite low expectations. I am surprised in city like New York, where there are millions of food choices (Indian or otherwise), a restaurant like Chola brought to you by tadka can stay in business with this poor quality food...or well I hope not for long.

I would rate it "0" on service if I had an option. Not only is the service bad, but they are a bunch of liars. I ordered the food and it was not even delivered 45 minutes after the promised delivery time. I called them twice and both times they said that they just dispatched the delivery. They refuse to take responsibility for bad delivery. Each time saying that they don;t know what the other person said. Avoid the resuarant if you can.

Delivery time has to be improved. They take at least an hour to deliver.

Delivery is ALWAYS late. For a 12 Noon delivery, it will usually come closer to 12:45 PM or 1:00 PM. Order only if you are willing to wait.

Delivery was quick; the naan was not great--was rather dry and stale and the tikka masala tasted like it was campell's tomato sauce broth

Great food, very economical, and quick delivery. One of the best I've encountered on SW all around.

BE WARNED: the "brought to you by tadka" means YOU ARE NOT GETTING YOUR FOOD FROM CHOLA. I placed an order and after waiting 1hour 10 minutes (like a few others) called Chola and was told to call a different number entirely. its been 1hour30minutes and still the food hasnt arrived. BE WARNED

I had one of the shrimp lunch specials and it was delicious. I had only been to the buffet before, but now this will be one of my delivery standbys. I didn't have any of the delivery problems mentioned in the other reviews.

The food is delicious, but if you are hungry try another place. Today I waited 1 hour and 27 minutes for my order.

I've ordered from Chola well over a dozen times and the food is just so memorable that I keep coming back. It is mature and sophisticated as well as balanced with many subtle flavors that aren't found in your typical Indian fare. My favorite dish is the Lata Shetty's Coondapur Chicken. Tender morsels of chicken in every bite and the most delicous, delicate coconut sauce I've ever had, with a subtle heat from the dried chilies that takes time to develop in your mouth. I highly recommend it. The great thing about the restaurant, though, is that everything is fantastic so you can't really go wrong. The thought that was put into the dishes is evident, even the rice is spectacular, beautifully scented with herbs and spices and a cinnamon stick. Alone it is great, but combined with the other food it adds a whole new dimension to the food. There are also the little things like the complimentary desserts and side dishes that come with your food, which stand out on their own. Just be aware that you will always get tons of food and one dish is enough to easily feed two people.

Its been 2 hours since I ordered my food and it still has not arrived. I call CHOLA and they give me the run around. SO if you order around 8pm and expect to be finishing your meal (or asleep and still hungy) at midnight - then brave the horrible delivery service and poor customer service. If not - order somewhere else - its only Indian food and there are like a zillion in NYC to order from.

Best food I've had through Seamless. Well-prepared and delivered on time.

I had a bad delivery experience, because it was raining and they had no idea where my building, 4 Times Square, was. They probably should not try to deliver this far - I wasn't paying attention when I placed the order or I would have anticipated that. The naan and samosas were too cold to be edible, but the other food was very good after I heated it up in the microwave. My only complaint is they should have a less ambitious delivery area.

good food, but expensive

The best thing about Chola cuisine is that on the NY Indian food scene, it is unique. While Chola offers the usual humdrum fare the all Indian restaurants in the U.S. offer (with eyes closed, I could reel off the 25 or so standard dishes on such menus - biryanis, tandooris, tikka masalas - need I go on?). But Chola is different - they offer all kinds of interesting South Indian non-veg cuisine. Their street snacks are also the best I've had in a while. Only thing is Chola is slightly pricier than the rest. Still, I say it is worth it!

Food is okay. Service is terrible. Had to wait for 1.5 hours to get the food delivered.

Excellent food. Delivery was not as problematic for me as it seems to have been for others. Perhaps this si because I order off-peak.

I am an Indian and have never tasted Indian food with such taste and diversity. This is arguably the best Indian restaurant in New York City.
